Creating great learning experiences
As the bank’s flagship learning and development centre, BMO’s Institute for Learning (IFL) designs and delivers world-class learning for BMO employees. We create innovative programs that build new capabilities and shift mindsets and behaviours in every business group, every location, and every level of the company.
We’re also passionate about sharing our space with others to support their learning goals.
Learning at BMO
For over 20 years, the IFL has stood as a tangible symbol of our commitment to engage employees to think differently and see possibilities – for themselves and for our customers.
Since opening its doors in 1994, the IFL has delivered more than a half million learning sessions to BMO employees.
Creating great learning experiences means paying attention to every detail – from course content to instructors, learning space, networking opportunities, accommodations and food. This unique approach ensures the learner experience not only reflects the bank’s values, but also how we treat our customers.
BMO’s customer promise – “We’re here to help” – also extends to our employees. We care about giving our employees opportunities to grow throughout their careers in ways that matter to them. Our commitment to learning focuses on helping employees build capabilities that drive results. By offering our employees engaging learning experiences, they’re inspired to create great experiences for our customers.
Leadership is a top priority at BMO.
We’ve created a highly innovative curriculum, unique to BMO, that is anchored in our passion for our customers, and our values, brand and the actions that define our company. Being a BMO leader means bringing these elements to life, and engaging others in what it means to work here. Our leadership approach has won numerous awards and we continue to evolve the curriculum to support our leaders, today and tomorrow.
We hire thousands of new employees each year. Our orientation program enables our people to make an impact from day one – giving them an opportunity to make new connections with other employees and understand the bank’s values and strategy.
Why is BMO so strongly invested in learning?
Quite simply, learning matters. We care about developing our employees for two key reasons:
- we owe it to our customers to continually build new capabilities to meet their evolving needs
- our employees have told us how important it is, for BMO to help them learn in their job, grow for their career and follow their passions
The IFL is a tangible symbol of BMO's commitment to our employees' learning and development, and in 2016, we invested approximately $78 million to deliver learning across the company (an average of $1700 and 26.9 hours per employee).
